We are very lucky to have obtained the services of former Kent, Somerset and England cricketer Chris Tavaré on Saturday 6th April 2019.

Chris is very much a local man and has been so for most of his life. He was educated at Sevenenoaks School and went on to gain a degree in zoology at St John's College, Oxford also having gained a cricket blue while he was there. He went on to play cricket for Kent from 1974 to 1988 and Somerset from 1989 to 1993. While he was at Kent he played 31 test matches for England where he gained an unfair reputation for being a slow opening batsman. His calm, scholarly demeanour - he was the antithesis of his lookalike Basil Fawlty - made him unpopular in Australia especially. Perhaps many English cricketers would enjoy having that skill! In fact, he normally batted at 3 or 4 and was pressed into opening the batting for England when there was no-one else (and England are still trying to find reliable opening batsmen in 2018).

Chris did it for the team at a time when England were crying out for someone to complement Gower, Lamb, Botham and co. He preferred to bat number 3 or 4 and showed his more adventurous ability in those positions especially in the one-day games and after he moved to Somerset. Since retiring from cricket he has returned to Kent and Sevenoaks School to teach biology and was master in charge of cricket where he encourages the next generation of youngsters.

Chris will talk about his life in Cricket and has agreed to do a question and answer session with us so get your questions ready.
