HISTORICAL DAY OUT - Monday, 2 September, 2019

Battle Abbey


Mermaid Street, Rye

Firstly, We will be stopping at approximately 10.00am for coffee in Battle. This attractive town gets its name from the Battle of Hastings, which was fought between Harold the Saxon King and William the Conqueror in 1066. The town has unusual shops and many tea rooms. Of course, you might like to visit the Abbey, which is an English Heritage property – free to members but for concessions the charge is £11.10.

At 12.30pm we will head to Rye with its enchanting cobbled streets and historical buildings. There are many things to do in Rye: Lamb House – former home of Henry James (National Trust – free to members or £7.50 for entrance), Ypres Tower, Harbour area, Rye Art Gallery, Rye Museum. School of Wizards and Witches. Do not forget to visit Mermaid Street with its famous inn.  There are many eateries ideal for lunch.

Please note that the coach will be leaving from outside King’s Hill Asda at 9.00am promptly and leaving Rye at 4.30pm approximately enabling us to be home by 6.00pm.
